History of the Salado Cemetery

The cemetery most likely had its beginning in about 1852, when the first post office was built here. It is the final resting place of such Central Texas pioneers as Herman Aiken, who surveyed the lots that formed the original town of Salado; the Rev. George Baines, third president of Baylor University and maternal great-grandfather of President Lyndon B. Johnson; Dr. B.D. McKie, a veteran of the Mexican War and the Texas Rangers; and the Rev. and Confederate Col. James E. Ferguson, whose son with the same name would become governor of Texas from 1915-17.
